John Miller - Counsel

After obtaining a 1st Class Honours degree in Electronic Engineering from Southampton University, John qualified as a solicitor with Eversheds in the city of London in 1995.  He then worked in-house at R. Griggs Group (manufacturer of Dr Martens® boots) and PowderJect Pharmaceuticals plc (a biotech innovator), where his interest in intellectual property grew.

As an engineer and lawyer, he joined a firm of Patent Attorneys and qualified as a UK Patent Attorney in 2003 and a European Patent Attorney in 2005.  After becoming a partner in that firm, he took an opportunity to join an investment management company to assist in building and managing investment portfolios. This enabled him to learn the skills of a financial analyst and he became a CFA® charterholder.

The pull back to the cutting edge of technical innovation proved irresistible and he soon returned to a start-up technology company where, as senior counsel, he helped build and manage a portfolio of 27 patent families as well as applying his broader legal and corporate finance skills to the general management of the business.

John has now returned to private practice, joining Graham Watt & Co as Counsel.  He specialises in patent prosecution and drafting, particularly in mechanical and electronic fields and is always happy to discuss IP and business strategy to help his clients achieve their goals.

Sophie joined the team at Graham Watt & Co in March 2015 as a Technical Assistant and has trained to become a European Patent Attorney.

Sophie graduated from the University of Southampton in 2013 with an Honours degree in Biomedical Science, where she particularly enjoyed modules relating to pharmacology, immunology and neuroscience.  Sophie completed two final year projects, the first involving research and analysis in the field of DNA nanotechnology, focussing on plasmid dimer formation using DNA crossover junctions.  Sophie’s second project was based on the botulinum neurotoxin with a focus on its mechanism of transport and its affects on the neuromuscular junction.

Sophie then gained a post-graduate Masters in Management of Intellectual Property from Queen Mary University of London.  During her Masters, Sophie undertook a dissertation that focussed on the availability of Supplementary Protection Certificates for pharmaceutical products.

Following her masters Sophie undertook some freelance patent research work for a small company that were concerned with the treatment and management of neurological disorders.

Since starting at Graham Watt & Co, Sophie has gained experience in a variety of different technical fields but predominantly works in the field of medical technology, having specific interests in pharmaceuticals, microbiology and immunology.  Her day-to-day work involves the prosecution and maintenance of patents at the UK and EPO.  She has also been involved in opposition work at the EPO and drafting patent specifications.
