John Miller - Counsel

After obtaining a 1st Class Honours degree in Electronic Engineering from Southampton University, John qualified as a solicitor with Eversheds in the city of London in 1995.  He then worked in-house at R. Griggs Group (manufacturer of Dr Martens® boots) and PowderJect Pharmaceuticals plc (a biotech innovator), where his interest in intellectual property grew.

As an engineer and lawyer, he joined a firm of Patent Attorneys and qualified as a UK Patent Attorney in 2003 and a European Patent Attorney in 2005.  After becoming a partner in that firm, he took an opportunity to join an investment management company to assist in building and managing investment portfolios. This enabled him to learn the skills of a financial analyst and he became a CFA® charterholder.

The pull back to the cutting edge of technical innovation proved irresistible and he soon returned to a start-up technology company where, as senior counsel, he helped build and manage a portfolio of 27 patent families as well as applying his broader legal and corporate finance skills to the general management of the business.

John has now returned to private practice, joining Graham Watt & Co as Counsel.  He specialises in patent prosecution and drafting, particularly in mechanical and electronic fields and is always happy to discuss IP and business strategy to help his clients achieve their goals.
